Using Google Translate to Get Chinese Romanizations

As a Canadian living in Taiwan, one of my biggest problems is that I am illiterate. Obviously, I can read and write English just fine, it’s my Chinese abilities that are somewhat lacking. I can speak and understand a little Chinese but when it comes to reading I am lost.

I have recently come across a partial solution to my illiteracy. If I use Google Translate to do a Chinese to Chinese translation then I will also be given the romanization of the Chinese characters. As long as I can copy and paste the characters into Google Translate then I will be given a phonetic spelling of those characters.

This is a simple tool but it is not a replacement for learning to read Chinese. This is possibly something that I may become more adept at in the future.
