Dropbox is probably one of the best services on the web. This is mostly because I use it very often and unlike other services on the web (such as Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, etc), Dropbox keeps me productive. Dropbox is a great tool for collaborating with other people virtually.
One of the ways that I make an income is from designing custom homes. To do this I work and collaborate with someone in Canada while living in Taiwan. We each have Dropbox installed and we have shared folders within Dropbox that contain our project files. This allows me to open a drawing file with Vectorworks in Taiwan and make changes. After I am finished, and I click save, the Dropbox servers will first sync my file to their web servers and then they will sync it to all computers that are connected to that shared folder, including my associates computer. This is done almost instantly which means I can be on Skype with him (my associate), make a change and then seconds later he can see what I have done.
Another bonus of using Dropbox is that you can revert to previous versions of a file or restore deleted files. Essentially, Dropbox also works as a back up system. In practice, we actually have three copies of our project files, one copy on my computer, one copy on his computer and one copy on Dropbox that is accessible anywhere I have access to a browser.
When Dropbox is used in conjunction with Skype, I can work and collaborate on projects with someone on the other side of the world just as effectively and efficiently as if they were sitting next to me in the same office. If you’re interested in giving Dropbox a try the click this link. (Disclaimer: By signing up to Dropbox using this link you help me to get a little extra free storage. Thanks! ☺)
