Coffee Lager Experiment

I finally got to taste my experimental coffee lager. Overall I will say that it isn’t bad, but it is different than what I expected. The first question most people ask is why did I want to do this. The answer is simple, I live in Taipei, Taiwan and it is hard to get homebrew supplies here. This is why I started www.TaipeiHomebrew.com. I got a large order of lager and instead of making the same thing over and over again I decided to make a variation.

I started off with a regular Coopers Lager kit but I used a different process than usual. I had read about people making different coffee beers and I thought I would give it a try. My theory was that if I mixed coffee into the primary fermentation and used brown sugar, instead of regular brew sugar, I would get something interesting. I should also note that I primed the batch with regular sugar. I wanted to use brown sugar because I was hoping to get more of a caramel like taste to compliment the coffee. The slight coffee taste came through but I didn’t get any of that caramel taste I was hoping for. The brown sugar adds to the complexity of the beer taste but I do find it a bit bold.

Overall, I will say that I am happy with the experiment but if I were to do it again I think I would not use brown sugar. Alternatively, I could use a blend of brown sugar and regular sugar. I also think that something like a dark ale would be better suited to being made into a coffee beer. Experimenting is fun and this is what I love about homebrewing.

Ha ha. Just like a Canadian to try to make beer out of coffee. Would have like to try it though. I am going to check out some of your other stuff. You should publish a recipe book!
