Honey Brown Lager

My latest experiment on lager variations has turned out well. Last time I tried my hand at a coffee lager. Since I like to try new things I thought I would try another variation on the pre hopped lager malt that I currently have on stock at Taipei Homebrew.

This time I tried for a honey brown lager. I did this by adding 600ml of longan honey along with 500 grams of brown sugar to the wort.

The honey isn’t that pronounced in this lager but it is noticeable. I used brown sugar that is local to Taiwan, since that is where I currently reside, and it is the more dominant of the the two fermentables. I had previously decided to never use it again to make beer but it was the only thing available to me. This time, I am not dissatisfied with it, but it still has a bit of a different aftertaste.

I would recommend trying this if you want a variation on a lager. In the future, I think I might try a honey coffee lager. However, I am getting a bit tired of lagers so I am leaning heavily towards brewing up an ale next, which is what I prefer.

In Defense of the iPad.

ipadThere have been a lot of negative comments on the web towards Apple related to the iPad. A lot of these comments are by people who can’t find an existing product line that this competes with. Probably the same people that predicted that the iPod would flop. First off, there is a reason that OS X isn’t on every computer. Some people really enjoy the Apple experience and some people don’t. That’s okay.

Of course, the tech industry thrives on page views, and they know that if they say that the iPad is garbage then they know that they are going to get the loyal Apple minions rallying. I don’t really think the “haters” have as much dislike for the iPad as they make out. They were probably hoping for more, all of the hype leading up to the announcement left some big shoes to fill.

Instead of focusing on what it’s not, let’s take a look at what it is. You’ll have to think differently about the device itself. It’s the Jetsons book! It is that “magical” (to quote Steve) device that is on the coffee table, in your bag, beside your bed, etc. It is the textbook you need for class, it is every encyclopedia (Wikipedia) you want, it is the world’s library, it is the web at your finger tips, it is the video your friend wants you to see of their newborn child, it is the morning newspaper, it is your email inbox, your social networks. I could go on, but I hope you get my point.

This device isn’t a computer. It is an appliance, a new type of appliance, that is always within reach and it can do whatever your connected life requires. If you need to get some serious work done then you’ll probably want to sit down at your iMac.

It isn’t a netbook or a laptop, and it isn’t meant to be. Critics comment that it doesn’t have a “real” keyboard. It has a touch keyboard and a dock accessory that has a real keyboard. Both of which get the job done. However, the better solution is a bluetooth keyboard, paired with a case that opens like a regular laptop. The bluetooth keyboard on one side and the iPad on the other. Pull the iPad out of the case and you’ve freed yourself from the clutter.

It doesn’t have multi-tasking. This, I agree, is it’s Achilles heel. Speculation is that iPhone OS 4.0 could add this. Again, we’ll have to wait and see.

I do see myself owning an iPad in the near future. Not as my primary computer, but as the appliance that I use for reading, surfing, periodicals, books, browsing, and enjoying. Think Different.

Quix – Your Bookmarklets, On Steroids!

Quix LogoAs it says right there on the Quix front page, “Your Bookmarklets, On Steroids” and they mean it. If you use a lot of  of bookmarklets, like I do, then you probably have a lot of them cluttering up your bookmarks bar in your browser. It isn’t always simple to find the one you want if you have a long list of them. This is where Quix steps in. One bookmarklet to rule them all! After you invoke Quix by clicking on the bookmarklet, all you have to do is type in your command. Quix has a list of the default commands but you can create your own by using their simple syntax and creating your own command file. Your custom file extends their default commands. I put my custom command file in Dropbox so that I can edit it live on my computer. When I hit save, the file is then synced back to Dropbox. If you aren’t familiar with Dropbox I suggest you read what I wrote about Dropbox before, here. This is also my replacement for Ubiquity since I have switched to the Chrome browser.

Boxee Box Changes the Game!

I have been following Boxee for a while and, even though I am not a current user, I think they are about to change the game. I used to have a two monitor system in my home office. I would have Boxee on one monitor and work on  the other. I don’t have that setup anymore. If I watch a video while working I usually have it in a small window on my iMac’s only monitor. I have played around with the beta but it really belongs in the living room, plus I shouldn’t be watching movies when I should be working. As great as the software is, it’s the Boxee Box that’ll be the game changer.

There are a few simple reasons for this. First off, I don’t know of any other media player box that I could buy for my parents, or my grandparents, and have them “get it”. To make it to work there is no flashing of the firmware or downloading of files etc. Just plug it in and it works. Also. the QWERTY keypad on the back of the remote was missing on the Apple remote that I used to use. This box puts internet TV, including podcasts, in the living room and more. It works with any file from any source.

Secondly, it works anywhere in the world. There are a few apps that are US specific but most of the apps will work right out of the box, no pun intended. Other set-top boxes rely on regional services and that puts us international users out of the picture.

Most of all, it’s social. If I am watching something and I think one of my friends will like it, all I have to do is hit a button on the remote. I can have it setup to send what I am watching or recommending to Facebook and Twitter, including what I find on Flickr or YouTube.

One of the most common complaints that I heard about the alpha was its kludgey interface. The new beta interface is a huge improvement and the content is much easier to navigate.

To sum it all up, you can watch anything, anywhere, at anytime. I am really looking forward to the release of the Boxee Box later this year.

Don’t Hide Behind an Avatar!

No, I am not talking about giant blue aliens. When the internet was young everybody had an online handle or dozens of them. On top of that, nobody used a real picture as their avatar, or display picture. Almost everyone should be using their true identity and picture on today’s social web.

Poor John Smith will have a hard time when signing up for services that require unique names. Luckily, most services that require users to use a unique name to sign up will also allow users to have their real names displayed. Your picture doesn’t have to be a professionally taken glamour shot. It should be a picture that clearly shows your face. Something that is clearly recognizable in thumbnails.

Why should you do this? People feel more comfortable talking to a person and not a person hiding behind a fake persona.

There are reasons not to do this. There isn’t much point having the PR guy’s picture and name representing a company if the company is trying to get its brand out there. If you are working for a company that does not allow it’s employees to use social media then you may also decide to use a fictitious persona, but you should also be looking for a new employer. Finally, if you are posting from within a country where your personal safety is at risk then you might be wise to use an online handle.
